Day 7 - all in a fog
Very odd not being able to see anything outside. Just the water beside ship. The for horn isn’t always sounding. Wonder why? The fog seems just as thick.
Slept in, today! 6:45! Sunrise is a little later (5:32), so that helps. Sunset is 7:51pm...much later than usual.
Still losing an hour at 9am. Which I can now follow, as I have a new watch. It is a hybrid (Fossil Q). Looks like a normal watch, but tracks steps and sleep...and other stuff, I’m sure. Just happy to know what time it is!
Each day at noon, we are given the navigational update, plus a nugget of maritime trivia. Today’s nugget was the origin of the phrase “as the crow flies”. Back in viking times, ships would carry cages of crows or ravens. When far out to sea, if the ship became lost, they would release a crow or raven. Because they are land birds, they would fly in the direction of the nearest land mass. The ship would then alter course to the nearest point of land...as the crow flies. This saying also evolved into the naming of the lookout spot high up on the mast of a sailing ship: The crow’s nest.
Soon we begin OUR longest day of the year!
