The bit I’d started on was to explain the current Emperor will be abdicating on April 30. First time this has happened in over 200 years. This caused or almost caused a constitutional crisis two years ago. Things have now calmed down & the Crown Prince will become the new Emperor & begin a new era.
We moved on from the palace, back to where we started, in Asakusa & the Kaminarimon Gate - a Buddist Temple, with a neighbouring Shinto shrine. For hundreds of years, the two religions were permitted to coexist. At some point, this was no longer true. However, you may still find a small Shinto shine on Buddist temple grounds. Some families will have both a shinto & buddist altar in their home.
It is good to see I spent my Sunday appropriately!
Last stop, the SkyTree Tower. It is the second largest free standing structure in the world. Poor, old CN Tower is about 9th, now.
PS - did you know...the cherry trees in Washington, DC were a gift from Japan? In return, they were given the gift of dogwood trees.
Tried to make it to 10pm, before lights out. Unconscious before 9pm. Over 22,000 steps logged.
